The cabins were in sight as Autumn scrambled over a rocky outcropping. The heel of her boot slipped on the smooth surface before getting caught in a crevice in the rock. She tumbled forward, twisting her ankle as she went down.
Nate dropped the Christmas tree and jogged back to where Autumn sat on the ground, rubbing her ankle. “Whoa, are you all right?”
“Yeah, I guess you were right about these not being the greatest shoes to wear on a hike in the woods.”
“Let me give you a hand up.” Nate helped her to her feet, but she winced when she took her first step. “What’s wrong?”
“I think I twisted my ankle, but I’m sure it’s fine.” She took another step but couldn’t put her full weight on her ankle.
“That doesn’t look fine to me.” Nate’s brows drew together as he continued holding onto her hand.
“You okay, Mama?” the kids asked.
“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. Look,” she pointed to the cabin visible through the trees. “We’re almost home.” She tried to take another step but wasn’t able to hide the shooting pain.
“Almost home, but not close enough,” Nate said. “Come on, put your arm around my neck. Let me help you.”
Nate crouched low enough for Autumn to drape an arm over his shoulders. He slipped a supportive arm around her waist, making it possible for her to limp to where he’d dropped the tree.
He cleared his throat. “Okay, this isn’t working. I’m going to tweak my back if I walk all the way to the cabin hunched over like this.”
“I’m sorry. You guys go on ahead. I’ll follow along at my own pace.”
“Uh, no. That doesn’t work for me.” Nate adjusted the rope he’d bound up the tree with, creating a loop at the end. He slung it across his chest before turning back to Autumn. “Leaving you behind is not an option.”
A small squeak escaped from Autumn's lips when he swept her off her feet, cradling her in his thick arms. She instinctively hugged his neck, simultaneously feeling silly for falling and exhilarated to feel Nate’s powerful chest beneath her arms.
He marched on through the forest, carrying Autumn and dragging the tree behind him, the cabins getting closer by the second.
“We’ve got to stop meeting like this,” she teased.
A shiver ran through her core when his arms tightened around her. “Do we?”
